Like time through the hourglass, we roll around into another month and another season. With a new season comes many changes – the leaves start falling, the flowers start blooming, and we start packing up one seasonal wardrobe to replace it with another. We start making changes to make ourselves more comfortable during the transition, so why don’t we do it more often for our skin too?

Our skin can change quite a bit with changes in seasons and air temperature. This in turn impacts how your skin feels and functions. Because of this, it’s important to gain an understanding of how these changes impact your skin and what you can do to keep it functioning at its best!

How your skin reacts to warmer climates

When your skin is warm, generally everything is stimulated – circulation increases, which in turn promotes oil secretion and sweat which increases moisture in your skin, and other functions like collagen production and elasticity are quite high. Increased circulation is kind of a magic ingredient of skin care, as it feeds many other functions of your skin which keeps it healthy.

The downside of warmer months, however, can include increased sun exposure and bathing in salty water (hello summer holidays), more time under the air conditioner, and clogged pores from things like increased oil production, sunscreen and sweat.

Because of all of this, you need to consider how to best care for your skin during the warmer months. Many people move to a lighter daytime moisturiser as they feel as though a thicker one may be too heavy in summer, while a liquid exfoliator can help to clean pores out to remove any build up from product. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, it’s worthwhile investing in a hydrating mask or treatment to up the water levels of your skin been sessions in the sun, and ensure you use an oil based cleanser to effectively remove all the sunscreen and oils from a busy day.

How your skin reacts to cooler climates

Kind of like going into hibernation, the functions of your skin start to slow down a little during the cooler months. Skin can easily become dry as less oil and sweat are produced, and we tend to spend more time under heaters which can dry skin out quickly. We’re also less likely to drink water as we don’t feel as thirsty as we do in warmer weather, resulting in dehydrated skin.

During this time, it’s worthwhile investing in a richer moisturiser to nourish your skin and avoid dryness. Anything with peptides is great at stimulating and protecting your skin to perk it up during the cool weather, and be sure to really massage your moisturiser in to improve skin circulation. Using a granular exfoliant in winter is also a good idea, as this will remove any surface dryness that can accumulate, and will stimulate your skin (don’t forget to exfoliate your lips too). Lastly, a weekly-monthly mask will help to boost your skin to keep it looking and feeling great, and give your skin the targeted treatment it needs.

While many of these changes to your skin might not be incredibly obvious, it’s worthwhile taking note of how your skin feels within different environments. Everyone is different and their skin will react according to your activities and natural skin chemicals, but having a better understanding of your skin reactions will lead to healthier skin in the long run as you’ll be able to care for it more effectively.
